ETA for Traveling to the United Kingdom

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

As of January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom has implemented a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for travelers to enter the UK. Travelers will need to apply online before departure. Recently, the UK updated the rules—if you’re just transiting through and not leaving the airport, you don’t need an ETA.

But here’s why I still recommend getting one:

What if your flight is delayed or canceled?

What if you need to rebook with an overnight stay?

What if you simply want the flexibility to leave the airport?

Without an ETA, you’d be stuck airside, unable to enter the UK.

I applied for and it was super easy—just a few minutes online, and I had approval in under 30 minutes. For peace of mind, just get it!

UK ETAs can be obtained by downloading the UK ETA app on the App Store or Google Play. If you are unable to download the app, you may apply online here.

You will need your passport handy as well as access to your email and a credit or debit card. The process includes filling out a form with your personal contact information, as well as taking a photo of your passport and yourself. The cost of the ETA is currently £10 (approximately $12 USD/$17 CAD) *

There are many SCAM websites, so please download the app from one of the above links or click here.

* Subject to change based on daily exchange rates

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

Regarding ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), it is a new electronic travel authorization required for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., visiting the Schengen Area in Europe. While it’s not a visa, it’s a quick online process aimed at enhancing security and simplifying travel. This is completely separate from the United Kingdom’s ETA.

Currently, ETIAS has not been implemented. Its launch has been delayed several times, and although it’s tentatively expected to go into effect around mid-2025, this timeline is not confirmed. I make it a priority to keep all my clients informed about important updates for their upcoming travels so rest assured, if you have planned a trip with me I’ll keep you updated if ETIAS becomes active before your vacation. For now, no action is required regarding ETIAS.
